PADI Project AWARE: Coral Reef Conservation Specialty

With global warming and pollution, the earth’s coral reefs are under attack. As ambassadors to the underwater world, scuba divers have a responsibility to preserve these delicate ecosystems. And that work begins with education.

The Project AWARE: Coral Reef Conservation specialty course teaches divers, snorkelers and nondivers about the vital role of coral reefs in the marine environment. The course also familiarizes participants with the current state of the world’s coral reefs and how they can help.

This non-diving course includes:

  • An introduction to Project AWARE
  • The importance of coral reefs to marine ecosystems and coastal areas
  • Coral reef biology, association and competition
  • The status of the world’s coral reefs
  • How participants can help, including responsible diving and snorkeling practices

Where can I go from here?

As you learn about coral reef conservation you may also want to work on a conservation project as part of your PADI National Geographic Diver certification. You can also take the other Project Aware courses, or the Underwater Naturalist courses. See the links in the sidebar at right for more information.
